Rajnath said, Uttarakhand is likely to become the first state to implement UCC

Lucknow: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that Uttarakhand is likely to become the first state in the country to implement Uniform Civil Code.

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Uttarakhand was one of the major poll promises made by the BJP ahead of the state assembly elections in 2022.

Addressing a gathering at the “Uttarayani Kauthik” event organized by people coming from Uttarakhand, Rajnath Singh said, “I think if any state is going to be the first in implementing the Uniform Civil Code, it will be Uttarakhand ” However, he did not elaborate on this.

After coming to power for the second consecutive term, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, in the first cabinet meeting under his chairmanship, approved setting up a committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to draft the UCC.

Addressing the “Uttarayani Kauthik” program in Lucknow, the Union Defense Minister said that Uttarakhand is not only the land of gods and heroes, but is now also being recognized as the land of development. He said that the state has made remarkable progress in the last five years.

Referring to the relations between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, he said, “After the separation of Uttarakhand from Uttar Pradesh, there was bitterness in the relations between the two states for some time. But this has never been seen among people.”

Singh said that even after 10 years of separation from Andhra Pradesh and formation of Telangana, there are many unresolved issues between the two states. He said, but after the division of Uttar Pradesh such things did not happen.

“The relations between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand remained so vibrant that despite all the pending issues, there was no discord between the people living in the two states. In fact, the relationship grew stronger,” he added.
