Road jam in Namsai due to death of laborer

Hundreds of people blocked a road in Dirak Gate area of Namsai district on Thursday to protest against the death of a laborer allegedly due to severe beating, police said.

The laborer, identified as Sab Taye, 60, was brutally beaten by three other workers on Monday, Namsai SP Sange Thinley told PTI. All of them worked together at a construction site.

Taye, a resident of New Silatu village in the district, later died.

The SP said that a case has been registered and three accused laborers have been arrested.

During interrogation, the accused claimed that they beat Taye after he was caught stealing a drilling machine and some other items from the site, Thinley said.

On Thursday morning, hundreds of people from all walks of life staged a sit-in and blocked the road in protest against the murder.

He demanded the arrest of the contractor who employed laborers for construction work.

Thingle said the road blockade was lifted later in the day and the situation was tense but under control.
