Rujira Banerjee filed a petition in the Supreme Court to travel abroad

Kolkata (IANS). Rujira Narula Banerjee, wife of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, on Thursday approached the Supreme Court alleging that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is deliberately and unnecessarily obstructing her travel abroad.

Sources said that the matter may come up for hearing in the apex court next week.

In the petition, he has said that the investigation of the coal case in West Bengal has been going on for some time. But the ED has never objected to his foreign travel before. But on June 5, he was stopped at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport before boarding a flight to Dubai.

He was informed by the Immigration Department that the ED had issued a “lookout notice” against him, so he was detained.

The same day, he was served a notice by the ED to appear at the central agency’s office for questioning in connection with the coal case in West Bengal.

Finally, on 8 June, she appeared at the ED’s Salt Lake office on the northern outskirts of Kolkata and faced questioning for nearly four hours.

At the same time, the Trinamool Congress leadership termed his detention at the airport as an act motivated by political vendetta on the part of the central government and the BJP.

Describing the development as an inhuman act on the part of the ED, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she was going abroad to meet her ailing mother.

“The Supreme Court has not imposed any restrictions on his foreign tours. The top court had asked him to inform the ED only once before leaving the country. And he had already informed the ED about the visit.”

The Chief Minister had said, “ED officials could have asked him not to travel abroad. But instead of doing so, he was stopped from boarding the flight and a notice was also issued on the same day. This is an inhuman act.” “
