Sangareddy: Villagers protest against dump yard near Gundlamchanur

Sangareddy: Finding the right place to build a dump yard for the Sangareddy Municipality has turned out to be a tough task for the municipal officials. After facing stiff opposition from residents of villages around Sangareddy town for several years, the municipal officials identified a piece of land for the dump yard at Gundlamchanur in Hathnura mandal, around 15 km from the town. They also scheduled the inauguration of the dump yard with Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha. However, the officials have cancelled the programme as the villagers are strongly opposing the move. Speaking to Telangana Today, former deputy sarpanch of the village Narasimha Reddy said that the government has allowed several chemical industries around his village which has made their lives difficult. Narasimha Reddy said that several villagers are falling sick due to the release of toxic gases, adding that the dump yard will make their lives even more difficult. He appealed to the officials to stop the move and shift the dump yard to another place. “Why are the municipal officials planning to carry the garbage to a distance of 15 kilometres every day by spending huge amounts on transportation?” he said, adding that people in and around the town had opposed their move to construct a dump yard near their homes. “When the locals, who were responsible for generating the garbage, were not allowed to construct a dump yard, how can they expect Gundlamchanur village to accept the proposal?” he asked, adding that they would not make another mistake by allowing a dump yard to be constructed on the village premises, as they had done by allowing chemical industries. The villagers said they would intensify their agitation if the municipal officials tried to go ahead with the proposal.
