Itanagar: Scientists have discovered a new species of ‘Music Frog’ in Arunachal Pradesh. He told that the specialty of this new species of frog (Nidirana Noadihing) is that both males and females are vocal.
‘This newly discovered frog has a unique call pattern consisting of two-three notes. Initially, we heard a call from a swamp near the Noa-Dihing River, which is very similar to that of a wild duck species, which we had never heard before,’ the scientists said in an article published in the November 15 edition of the journal Zootaxa.
Scientists Bitupan Borua, V Deepak and Abhijit Das said they conducted field surveys in Changlang and Lohit districts of the northeastern state between August and September last year, during which they discovered the frog, which grows up to 6 cm and is pale cream in colour. Is coloured. Line at mid body.
Amidst the vegetation in shallow ponds of water, scientists found male frogs with ‘strong’ bodies who were making loud noises. He said in the article that other samples were heard from nearby marshy areas, the banks of a newly constructed pond, and the side of a nearby road.
Scientists said they collected five of the Noa-Dihing music frogs – three males and two females.
The new species was named after the Noa-Dihing River, which is near the location where the specimens were discovered and collected.
The frogs have ‘robust’ bodies, he said, with males measuring about 1.8 inches to 2.3 inches long and females measuring about 2.4 inches to 2.6 inches long.
Frogs have ’round’ snouts with bony projections on their backs and ‘smooth’ skin. Amphibians have a ‘pale cream’ line, bordered by dark brown running down the center of their body. Their light brown limbs are decorated with dark stripes.
According to scientists, the new species has confirmed for the first time that the Nidirana genus has been found in India. Nidirana species are known in Japan, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
Amphibians have ‘spots of irregular shape and size’ on their eyelids and dark stripes around their moderately large eyes. His pupils are studded with gold. The pupils of his eyes are dark brown in color and have a golden shine on them.
According to the study, the throat, front legs, thighs and lower legs of the frogs are light brown and pink in color. The outside of their waist and thighs are pale yellow with irregular dark olive spots, and they have a golden tinge on their cream-colored chest and belly.
The study said Nidirana are known to live in swamps, ponds and paddy fields and they often build nests to lay their eggs.
The Noa-Dihing music frogs are distinct from other species because of their size, their oval toes, the tubercles on their backs and their unique call, the researchers said.
Scientists observed that the discovery of a new species validates the presence of the genus Nidirana from India and emphasizes the importance of exploring specialized habitats, such as marshlands, which are often ignored.
