Shane McDermott becomes Afghanistan’s new fielding coach
Kabul: The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Thursday announced the appointment of Shane McDermott as the new fielding coach of the senior men’s team.
The ACB said McDermott is set to join the squad during Afghanistan men’s tour of Sri Lanka across all formats on February 1.
McDermott holds a High Performance Level Three Coaching Certificate and has extensive experience working with teams at international and domestic level.
He was most recently the assistant fielding coach of the Bangladesh men’s team. He was in this role since 2022.
He has also served in the same position with the Sri Lankan senior men’s team from 2019–2022 and was the head coach of the Sri Lanka A team for a period of three years.
Prior to his stints with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Shane McDermott worked at Cricket Australia’s National Cricket Center as Interim National Team Assistant/Fielding Coach and Interim National A Team Analyst and Fielding Coach from 2012 to 2019.
Additionally he has played a role in the coaching setup during recent ICC events, including the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and 2022 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup events in 2021 with the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka teams.
After holding similar positions with the Western Australia Cricket Association and Tasmania teams in the Australian domestic cricket circuit, McDermott also served as the National Academy Head Coach/National Team Strength and Conditioning Head Coach at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from 2005 to 2007. work done.
Afghanistan recently appointed Andrew Puttick as the new batting coach of the men’s team. ACB said that they will appoint a performance analyst and an S&C trainer in the future.
On the Sri Lanka tour, Afghanistan will play their first Test match against the hosts in Colombo, followed by three ODIs and three T20 matches from February 2-21.
