Shocking case of fraud, three thugs caught cheating in the guise of a monk

Gumla (Uttar Pradesh): An unusual case of deception unfolded in the Sisai block of Gumla district, and three impostors disguised as ascetics arrived at a household. One of them claimed to be a long-lost family member. These impostor ascetics managed to swindle money from the family and then hastily made their escape. The local police conducted an investigation and subsequently apprehended all three individuals involved, subsequently detaining them in prison. The three individuals masquerading as ascetics were identified as Arun Yogi, Mohammad Farooq, and Mohammad Safruddin, all hailing from Uttar Pradesh.

According to the Senior Police Officer (SHO), Satyam Gupta, these men are residents of Kulkupi Mahua Toli village within the jurisdiction of the local police station. The case was filed based on a complaint by a person named Fourth Devi, who accused the impostors of fraud. In response, the police organized a raiding team and successfully arrested the three criminals. During the operation, the authorities confiscated Rs 5,000 in cash, two musical instruments (sarangis), and four mobile phones from the suspects.

As per the complainant’s account, the brother-in-law, Shukraman Oraon, had disappeared from the household twelve years ago. On a Sunday morning at 8:00 am, three impostors arrived at the house disguised as ascetics. One of them, named Arun, falsely claimed to be Shukraman Oraon and even accurately recited the names of all family members. The family members were taken in by his deceit. The impostor ascetic then imposed a condition for renouncing his ascetic life and returning to family life, requiring the family to organize a feast (Bhandara) for 10,000 ascetics. He stated that approximately three lakh rupees would be needed for the event and demanded an initial sum of 10,000 rupees, along with some clothing. Relying on his deceit, Fourth Devi provided the impostor ascetics with Rs 10,000 and clothing.

Subsequently, it came to light that these impostor ascetics were fraudsters, as disclosed by local ward members and villagers. Another person, Dukhmani Devi from Shivnathpur village, had also been targeted by the same three impostors, who impersonated her long-missing husband, Chamra Oraon, missing for 15 years. However, thanks to the vigilance of the villagers, Dukhmani Devi escaped falling victim to their scheme.

Upon learning of these fraudulent activities, the local police assembled a team and launched a raid. The operation was overseen by Police Station In-Charge Satyam Gupta. The subsequent investigation revealed that all three impostors hailed from Uttar Pradesh and belonged to the minority community. The three were taken into judicial custody and detained.
