Singer Chitra faces criticism over social media post on Ram temple event in Ayodhya
Thiruvananthapuram: Singer KS Chitra’s prayer on the occasion of the consecration of the Ayodhya temple has left social media users divided.
While she is facing severe criticism from liberal and leftist handles, people with allegiance to the right-wing Hindutva ideology are supporting the singer wholeheartedly.
Interestingly, except singer G Venugopal, celebrities from the film and music world have decided to remain silent.
In a video that went viral on social media, Chitra asked devotees to sing hymns in praise of Lord Shri Ram and light five lamps around their homes on the Abhishek day.
His prayer request was sharply criticized by many prominent personalities.
Writer Indu Menon even called him a ‘dishonest cuckoo’.
He said, “Those who are interested in classical art would have sung hymns in praise of Ram, Vishnu and Sita. “This does not mean that they should support the killing of innocent people.”
“No matter how many times you take the name of God, no Ram or Vishnu will come to the help of those who are covered in blood, who are running or who are in pain. A lamp with not five but five lakh wicks will bring light to your mind. Your voice convinced the world that you were a cuckoo. But now you have proved yourself to be a dishonest cuckoo.”
Singer Venugopal appealed to the people to forgive Chitra once. “He sang many songs for us. If we have different opinions on this issue, can’t we forgive him for once? Every revolutionary will have a mother and elder sisters in his house who will advise him to pray or go to church or offer namaz. No one will break ties with their relatives for this reason.”
Venugopal said that Chitra had no allegiance to any political ideology and was not much interested in reading or writing. He said, “He only expressed his devotion towards the big temple being built in India. His heart is full of music, devotion, love and equality.”
