SIR will be conducted only after the official notification of NRC in Assam: Chief Minister Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that a comprehensive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s voter lists is dependent on the official notification of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). He estimates the process will be completed by the middle of next year.
He explained that the current voter list contains serious discrepancies that raise questions about its reliability.
Citing specific issues, CM Sarma pointed to the names of deceased individuals, minors ineligible to vote, and married women whose entries have not been updated to reflect changes in their surnames or addresses. He said these errors highlight the urgent need for a systematic revision.
Shri Sarma, citing the prerequisite for the SIR, said that the NRC has not yet been notified. Once it is completed, hopefully by the middle of next year, the Special Intensive Revision in Assam can finally be conducted.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister confirmed that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the state administration to conduct a Special Intensive Revision. This measure is a corrective measure to identify and address existing discrepancies in the voter list before the broader NRC process begins.
This announcement underscores the state government’s continued efforts to ensure the accuracy and reliability of Assam’s electoral database.
The Election Commission of India announced on Monday that Assam will conduct a special revision of its voter lists; the process will conclude with the publication of the final voter list on February 10, 2026.
This decision comes as the state approaches the 2026 assembly elections, and the accuracy of the voter list remains a focus of political discussion in Assam.
As Assam’s political climate is often influenced by debates on citizenship and cross-border migration, this special revision is expected to generate intense public interest as well as strong criticism from opposition parties.
