Slight decline in murder cases in the country in 2022
New Delhi: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released its latest data, which indicates a slight decline in murder cases across the country in 2022. According to this, 28,522 FIRs of murder were registered last year i.e. an average of 76 murders per day. In the year 2021, 29,272 FIRs of murder were registered.
The report also identifies the primary motives behind these crimes. The highest number of 9,962 murders took place in ‘Vivaad’. This was followed by cases of ‘personal vendetta or enmity’ (3,761) and ‘benefit’ (1,884). The data showed that 95.4 percent of murder victims were adults, with approximately 70 percent being men. The victims included 8,125 women and nine third-gender individuals. Metropolitan cities saw a 3.9 percent increase in murder cases, reaching 2,031 in 2022.
The crime rate per lakh population stood at 2.1, while the rate of filing of charge sheets in such cases was 81.5 percent. According to the NCRB report, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of FIRs, 3,491. It is followed by Bihar (2,930), Maharashtra (2,295), Madhya Pradesh (1,978), and Rajasthan (1,834). Overall, these five states account for 43.92 percent of murder cases in the country.
In contrast, Sikkim (9), Nagaland (21), Mizoram (31), Goa (44), and Manipur (47) recorded the least number of murder cases in 2022. Among Union Territories, Delhi recorded 509 murder cases in 2022. This is followed by Jammu and Kashmir (99), Puducherry (30), Chandigarh (18), Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (16), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (7), Ladakh (5), and Lakshadweep (0). Are.
