Stampede at Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai; seven Kanwariyas dead.

Lakhisarai. A major tragedy occurred in Lakhisarai, Bihar, on the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan. Seven Kanwariyas (pilgrims) died and several others were injured in a stampede amidst a massive crowd at the Ashok Dham temple complex. Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar confirmed the seven fatalities. Following the incident, chaos and cries of distress engulfed the area, stretching from the temple complex to the hospital. The district administration, police, and local residents are engaged in relief and rescue operations.
According to preliminary reports, a large number of Kanwariyas and devotees had arrived at the Ashok Dham temple since Monday morning to perform Jalabhishek (ritual offering of water) to Lord Shiva. As it was the third Monday of Sawan, the number of devotees in the temple complex was significantly higher than on ordinary days. After 6:00 AM, the pressure of the crowd intensified rapidly, making the situation difficult to manage.
Amidst this, rumors spread that an electric pole had fallen near the temple complex and that electric current was leaking. This rumor triggered sudden panic among the devotees, causing them to scramble for safety. In the dense crowd, many devotees fell while trying to push forward. Those following behind did not have time to grasp the situation and ended up falling over one another. Within moments, the situation escalated into a stampede.
It is reported that the bamboo barricades collapsed under the immense pressure of the crowd. With the barricades broken, a large number of devotees surged forward simultaneously, further worsening the situation. Those who had fallen to the ground had no chance to recover; many were crushed, and several others sustained injuries.
The deaths of seven Kanwariyas have been confirmed; a significant number of the deceased are reported to be women. Following the incident, the injured devotees were immediately rushed to the hospital, where a team of doctors and medical staff is attending to them. The atmosphere at the hospital turned somber as the families and relatives of the injured gathered there. Lakhisarai District Magistrate (DM) Shailendra Kumar has arrived at the hospital to monitor the situation. He stated that all the injured are receiving medical treatment. The administration’s priority is to ensure the injured receive proper medical care and to normalize the situation. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) Prerna Kumar is camping at the temple premises, overseeing security arrangements and relief operations.
Upon receiving news of the incident, additional police and administrative teams were deployed to the site. Efforts began to control the crowd within the temple complex, evacuate the injured, and transport them to the hospital. Local residents also assisted the administration in relief and rescue operations. Police deployment has been increased to maintain order within the temple premises following the accident.
Ashok Dham Temple is one of Bihar’s prominent religious sites, attracting a large number of Shiva devotees during the month of Sawan. The number of pilgrims rises significantly, especially on Mondays. Due to it being the third Monday of the month, long queues of Kanwariyas (pilgrims carrying holy water) had formed early in the morning to perform Jalabhishek (ritual offering of water to the deity). As the number of devotees swelled, the pressure on the barricades increased.
Questions are now being raised regarding the crowd management system at the temple complex following the accident. Adequate arrangements for entry and exit, along with robust barricading, are considered essential given the likelihood of large crowds gathering. Furthermore, it is crucial to provide accurate information to devotees immediately in the event of rumors. The actual causes and the full sequence of events will only become clear after an administrative inquiry.
According to preliminary information, the situation suddenly spiraled out of control due to the swelling crowd, the collapse of barricades, and rumors of an electric shock spreading. After the accident, many people were seen searching for their loved ones; some were worried about family members, while others were busy rushing the injured to the hospital. Within minutes, the atmosphere of the religious gathering turned into one of mourning.
A chaotic situation prevailed at the hospital as well, due to the arrival of a large number of people. Administrative officials are in contact with health department authorities, and the condition of the injured is being closely monitored. Instructions have been issued to ensure the availability of necessary medical facilities for the treatment of critically injured pilgrims.
Crowd management remains a major challenge given the large influx of pilgrims at religious sites during the month of Sawan. A stampede-like situation can arise when a large number of people move in a single direction simultaneously. The Lakhisarai incident has once again highlighted the need for robust barricading, controlled entry, separate exit routes, and effective information systems to prevent the spread of rumors during large religious gatherings.
Currently, police and administrative teams are deployed at the temple complex. District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar is overseeing the arrangements for the treatment of the injured at the hospital, while Superintendent of Police Prerna Kumar is camping at the temple premises. Relief and rescue operations are underway with the assistance of the administration and local residents. The deaths of seven pilgrims have plunged their families into grief, and an atmosphere of mourning prevails across the entire area.
