Stolen more than 24,000 gold chains by posing as a customer
Mumbai: The owner of a jewelery shop in Ghatkopar has approached the police alleging a robbery at his shop on December 19.
According to the complainant, Sunil Chordia, who runs a jewelery shop named Monalisa on MG Road, Ghatkopar West, on December 19 at around 4:30 pm, when he was alone at his shop, two people came in who said they were a Want to buy jewellery. Gold chain. One was wearing a light blue shirt and the other was wearing a T-shirt, whose name was Sahil Salunkhe, Chordia said. The man, wearing a light blue shirt, told Chordia that it was his friend Sahil’s birthday and he wanted a chain worth between ₹25,000 and ₹30,000.
After looking at some four to five chains, he finalized one, weighing 3.900 grams, which was priced at ₹24,500. The man named Sahil immediately wore the gold chain around his neck, while the other man was talking to Chordia who was preparing the bill. They finalized the bill and both said that the payment will be done through Google Pay.
“I opened my UPI app and provided him with the scanner to make the payment, but the man wearing a light blue shirt asked for my number, and said he would transfer the money directly. He took my number, and then said he Will go out as the network inside the shop is low. Shortly after I received a text message saying that ₹24,500 has been credited to my account through an unknown number. I asked a person named Sahil about the number. I asked, he said it was another man’s number. Sahil saw the text message, he took the bill from my hand and went out. I immediately checked my bank balance and found that no money was credited to my account. ,” Chordia said.
Chordia ran after them, but Sahil managed to escape through a small road with a gold chain around his neck, while the other man, wearing a light blue shirt, attempted to get on the back of the motorcycle. Chordia caught hold of the latter and his bike slipped. “They managed to flee the spot leaving behind their motorcycle,” Choradia said.
Chordia said that he has handed over the footage of CCTV cameras installed inside and outside his shop to the police. Still, there has been no progress in the case from the police side. Police have also seized the motorcycle left behind and are trying to trace the owner of the vehicle.
