Student commits suicide in IIT Kanpur
Jharkhand: A student has committed suicide in IIT Kanpur. Priyanka Jaiswal (29), resident of Dumka district of Jharkhand, was found hanging in the campus. This is the third case of suicide. Even before this, two incidents of suicide have come to light. Police has arrived on the information of suicide of the student. The forensic team has also reached the spot and is engaged in investigation. Priyanka Jaiswal was doing PhD in Chemical Engineering. Priyanka had taken admission only on December 29, 2023. The student’s father Narendra Jaiswal was calling his daughter since morning, but did not receive Priyanka’s call. Narendra was upset because of this. When Priyanka did not receive the call, she called hostel manager Ritu Pandey. He told the hostel manager that his daughter was not picking up the phone since morning.
Joined college only on 29th December
On information from IIT administration, police and field unit have reached the spot. Necessary action is being taken. Police are also collecting information from other students. It has also been told by the IIT administration that the student has joined PhD Chemical Engineering in IIT Kanpur last month on 29 December 2023. Assistant Police Commissioner Kalyanpur Abhishek Kumar Pandey said that investigation is being done.
Third case within a month
This is the third incident of suicide in IIT Kanpur within a month. Pallavi Chillaka, posted as Project Executive Officer in IIT Kanpur, had committed suicide in the hostel room on December 19. Pallavi was originally from Odisha. He joined here in August 2023. After this, on January 10, Vikas Kumar Meena, resident of Kankarkheda, Meerut, committed suicide. Meena was doing M.Tech in Aerospace Engineering. Vikas Meena had written a suicide note. Someone had stolen this suicide note from his room. Police are looking for suicide note.
