20 MW of electricity to be generated on the rooftops of government buildings: Work to begin soon.

Tamil Nadu: The Green Energy Corporation has announced that work will soon begin on a 20-megawatt solar power generation project to be installed on the rooftops of government offices in Tamil Nadu.
Government offices across various departments in Tamil Nadu have been failing to pay their electricity bills to the electricity board. Many offices have outstanding bills. To address this problem, the corporation has decided to install solar power plants on the rooftops of municipal offices, collector’s offices, government hospitals, government colleges, and government schools, and the Green Energy Corporation is undertaking this work. Although the contract was awarded last year, the contractual work has been completed, and the installation of solar power plants is underway.
Officials from the Green Energy Corporation stated:
This project will be implemented throughout Tamil Nadu. In the first phase, it was decided to install solar panels on government office buildings in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts. Accordingly, the identification of suitable buildings for this project had been underway for the past few months. This work has been completed, and the contracting companies are now installing the solar power generation systems on the buildings.
The company that wins the contract will install all the infrastructure for solar power generation and maintain it for 25 years. The electricity board will purchase the surplus electricity generated each month after the office’s own consumption. The company will be paid for the green energy generated after the calculation of the fees. The cost of the project is estimated to be approximately Rs. 6 crore per megawatt.
In the first phase, steps are being taken to generate 20 megawatts of power in selected major government office buildings within Chennai. Hospitals are being given priority because they require 24-hour power supply and have large rooftop areas. They added that the work is in progress and will be completed soon, and power generation will commence.
