Tamil Nadu: Yellow alert issued for 5 districts; heavy rainfall and strong winds expected.

Tamil Nadu: The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Yellow’ warning for five districts of Tamil Nadu—Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul—for Thursday (May 21). According to the department, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is likely to occur at one or two places within these districts. Following this warning, the administration has been instructed to remain on alert.

A press release issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday stated that a low-pressure area has formed, extending from the southeastern Arabian Sea across Lakshadweep, northern Kerala, southern interior Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, reaching up to the central Bay of Bengal. It is due to this specific weather system that a change in weather patterns is being observed across Tamil Nadu and its surrounding regions.

According to the Meteorological Department, as a result of this influence, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to occur at isolated places across the Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions from Thursday through May 26. In several areas, the impact of the rainfall may be more intense, accompanied by occasionally strong winds.

Specifically for Thursday, the forecast indicates a possibility of isolated heavy rainfall, lightning strikes, and strong winds in the districts of The Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul—including the hilly tracts of the Coimbatore district. It is in light of these conditions that a ‘Yellow’ alert has been issued for these districts.

A ‘Yellow’ alert signifies that weather conditions may deteriorate beyond the normal range, necessitating that the public exercise caution. The administration has directed disaster management units in the concerned districts to remain in a state of readiness to effectively handle any potential emergency situations.

Furthermore, the Meteorological Department has indicated that moderate rainfall is likely in certain parts of Chennai and Puducherry on Thursday. This is expected to result in a slight drop in temperature within urban areas, bringing about a cooling effect in the weather.

According to weather experts, this shift is being driven by regional atmospheric pressure dynamics and sea breezes; consequently, intermittent rainfall may persist across various parts of the state over the next few days. Officials have advised the public to remain vigilant during adverse weather conditions and to refrain from undertaking unnecessary travel.
