Chennai: 3 including revenue inspectors arrested for cheating of Rs 11 lakh

Chennai: Three persons including two revenue inspectors have been arrested for allegedly embezzling Rs 11.63 lakh from the NRI relief fund account of the Chennai District Collector’s Office by using forged signatures and fake documents. The NRI relief fund is a scheme designed to provide financial assistance to the families of Indian workers who die while on employment abroad. The money is credited to an account managed by the respective district collectors. The fraudsters in this case posed as legitimate beneficiaries of the relief fund and illegally withdrew the amount using fake documents, Daily Thanthi reported.
The scam came to light after Harshad Begum, Assistant Collector of Chennai district, lodged a complaint at the North Beach police station. In her complaint, she revealed that Rs 11.63 lakh was fraudulently withdrawn from the NRI account by submitting fake documents. After investigation, the police found that Dinesh, a van driver from Thiruvallur, was impersonating as a beneficiary of the relief fund. Along with Dinesh, two revenue inspectors also assisted in the fraud, processing forged documents and withdrawing money. Following investigation, Dinesh and two revenue inspectors were arrested. The police are continuing interrogation to gather more details about the operation and identify other persons involved.
