Norway plans social media ban for children under 16, bill to pass by year-end

New Delhi: Norway has planned to ban social media for children under the age of 16 and has also mentioned that the bill for the same will be passed in the parliament by the end of the year.

As per reports, “We are introducing this legislation because we want a childhood where children get to be children,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement.

The government has said that technological companies are responsible to check on the age of the user and verify them. The list of the applications on which the ban will be imposed is yet to be revealed.

This decision was taken so that children spend more time in playing, making friends and maintaining them, everyday life instead of using mobile phones and scrolling social media.

It is being reportedly said by the minority Labour government that the bill will be introduced to parliament by the end of 2026.

Similar ban was imposed on social media ban for children in Australia last year in December and became the first country of the world to do this.

Australia’s ban covers Meta apps such as Instagram and Facebook as well as TikTok, Snapchat, Google’s YouTube and X which was formerly known as Twitter.
