Water pollution is a matter of concern in MP Congress will take to the streets
Indore : Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari on Saturday said incidents of contaminated water supply in Indore’s Bhagirathpura and more recently in Mhow have created widespread fear among people across the state over the use of water supplied by municipal authorities.
Patwari claimed that incidents of water contamination were no longer limited to Indore or Mhow and that similar cases were being reported from several other urban areas of Madhya Pradesh. He alleged that due to fear of contamination, many residents had stopped consuming water supplied by civic bodies.
“The state government needs to take this issue very seriously. It is ironic that the BJP has been in power in Madhya Pradesh for the last 20 years, yet it has failed to provide safe drinking water to the people,” Patwari said while reacting to the Mhow incident, where more than two dozen people reportedly fell ill.
He further said the Congress would organise a major protest and awareness campaign across the state over the issue of contaminated water.
“Water contamination is becoming more critical with each passing day. So far, 27 people have died in Bhagirathpura, and now 25 people have fallen ill in Mhow. The situation demands a large-scale protest and public outreach programme, and the Congress is preparing for it,” Patwari said.
On Saturday evening, a group of people staged a protest by placing the body of a deceased person on the road, alleging that the death had occurred due to consumption of contaminated water.
The Congress shared a video of the protest on its social media platforms, claiming that the family of the deceased was unable to bear the cost of the last rites and that neither the administration nor the government had provided assistance or fixed accountability.
Meanwhile, several suspected cases of stomach infection were reported from the Patti Bazaar area of Mhow on Friday, prompting authorities to deploy multiple medical survey teams to provide treatment and assess the situation.
