Chennai: New initiative by ‘Lioness Special Task Force’ for women’s safety.

Tamil Nadu: To strengthen the safety of women and children in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu Police has constituted a new special unit called the ‘Lioness Special Task Force.’ IG K. Bhavanishwari provided detailed information about this force at the Chennai DGP office on Wednesday. She stated that the primary objective of this special task force is to take immediate action against crimes committed against women and to provide rapid security in any emergency situation.
According to IG K. Bhavanishwari, the force has undergone specialized training, including weapons handling. The aim is to ensure that teams deployed in the field can take immediate action while keeping themselves safe during critical situations. The force will not limit itself to merely responding to incidents; it will also implement preventive measures by identifying areas prone to potential threats.
The task force will be deployed in public spaces, including bus stands, crowded markets, office districts, and other sensitive locations. Regular patrols will be conducted in these areas to ensure women’s safety. Additionally, special attention will be paid to areas where crimes against women have occurred in the past or where there is a perceived risk of such incidents in the future. Surveillance will be intensified in these locations based on gathered intelligence to minimize the likelihood of repeat offenses.
The ‘Lioness Special Task Force’ has been mandated to work in collaboration with existing Tamil Nadu Police units. This involves coordination with the ‘Crimes Against Women and Children Unit,’ ‘All-Women Police Stations,’ and other relevant police divisions. Furthermore, the assistance of volunteers will be enlisted to strengthen grassroots-level surveillance and awareness campaigns.
This initiative also emphasizes raising awareness regarding sexual crimes against women and children. The police department believes that awareness and the timely sharing of information can significantly prevent such crimes. In this regard, there are plans to conduct awareness campaigns through the ‘270 Group,’ educating the public on safety measures, precautions, and the procedure for filing complaints. Through this new task force, the Tamil Nadu Police aims to make public spaces safer for women and ensure immediate and effective action against any form of criminal activity.
