After obtaining permission from the Fisheries Department, seven fishermen set out to sea in two motorboats from the Rameswaram Fishing Harbor in Ramanathapuram district on Wednesday. While they were fishing near Neduntheevu on Wednesday night, Sri Lankan Navy patrol boats arrested all seven of them on charges of fishing across the border. They also seized the two motorboats.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Navy took the powerboat and seven fishermen to the Kankesan Naval Base and handed them over to the country’s fisheries officials on Thursday.
It is reported that two fishermen have been charged with fishing across the border and using banned nets. They will be produced in court and sent to jail. The fishermen are deeply upset by the arrests made by the Sri Lankan Navy.
