Mumbai Mumbai: Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have withdrawn over Rs 23,710 crore from Indian equity markets so far this month, according to repository data. With this, the total withdrawals in 2025 have crossed Rs 1 trillion amid rising global trade tensions. FPIs have sold shares worth Rs 23,710 crore from Indian equities till February 21. This comes after a net withdrawal of Rs 78,027 crore in January. According to depository data, the total withdrawals by FPIs so far in 2025 have reached Rs 1,01,737 crore.

From the debt market, FPIs withdrew Rs 7,352 crore from the debt normal limit and Rs 3,822 crore from the debt voluntary retention route. Overall, the trend indicates a cautious stance by foreign investors, who substantially reduced investments in Indian equities in 2024, with a net inflow of only Rs 427 crore. In contrast, 2023 saw exceptional net inflows of Rs 1.71 trillion due to optimism over India’s strong economic fundamentals. In comparison, 2022 saw a net outflow of Rs 1.21 trillion amid aggressive rate hikes by global central banks. The Nifty has delivered a negative return of 4 per cent so far this year due to the massive sell-off.
