Tamil Nadu TASMAC issues major directive: Strict action on sale of liquor to those under 21

Tamil Nadu: TASMAC, the state-run agency for alcohol sales and control in Tamil Nadu, has issued an important directive regarding the liquor sales and control system. The order clearly states that alcohol will not be sold to anyone under the age of 21. All employees have been instructed to strictly enforce this rule. Violators have also been warned of departmental action.

This directive comes at a time when the newly formed government has recently made several changes to the liquor sales system. According to reports, upon assuming office, the new government also issued an order to close 717 TASMAC shops across the state. Following these decisions, administrative activity regarding the liquor sales and control system has increased.

TASMAC administration stated in its new order that this strict action was taken following continued complaints regarding underage alcohol consumption. The department believes that underage alcohol availability poses a serious concern for both society and health, and therefore, control is essential.

The order also clarifies that employees at all sales outlets must verify customers’ age. If there is any doubt about a customer’s age, Aadhaar card, driving license, or other valid identification documents must be verified to confirm their identity. Liquor sales will only be permitted after identity verification.

In addition, TASMAC has instructed all shops and employees that any negligence in following the rules will not be tolerated. If any employee or vendor is found selling alcohol to anyone under 21 years of age, departmental action will be taken against them, which could include strict job-related action.

This decision has sparked a new debate regarding the state’s liquor sales policy. While the government and administration are calling it a step towards control and social security, discussions are raging regarding the operation and closure of liquor stores.

TASMAC has asked all concerned staff to ensure compliance with the instructions and the process of regular inspection has also been intensified to ensure proper compliance with the rules.
