Non-communicable diseases: Madurai has the highest number of cases in the country

Tamil Nadu: A study has revealed that the cities of Madurai and Trichy in India have the highest incidence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Apollo Medical Group conducted a health assessment study of over 3 million people across the country, which has now been released.

It revealed that two out of three young people are at risk of developing a non-communicable disease. Another one in five has pre-diabetes.

Eight out of ten working adults are obese, and more than 50 percent of them have been diagnosed with diabetes or its early stages.

Similarly, women are at higher risk of breast cancer, anemia, and vitamin deficiencies.

Madurai and Trichy are the top two cities in the country for diabetes, blood pressure, anemia, and obesity. Chennai is in fifth place, followed by Bangalore and Mumbai. Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman of the Apollo Group, said, “Health assessment is not a fear-mongering activity. It is an activity to anticipate our physical health. Studies will help us accurately identify disease risk factors and accelerate preventive measures.”

Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairman and Sangeeta Reddy, Managing Director of the Apollo Medical Group, said, “Timely screening can help in early detection and treatment of non-communicable diseases like heart disease and cancer.”
