Indore: Fourth Bird Survey Organized at Holkar College on World Sparrow Day
Madhya Pradesh: On the occasion of World Sparrow Day, the Department of Seed Technology at Holkar Science College, in collaboration with ‘Wild Warriors,’ organized its fourth bird survey to assess avian diversity and raise awareness regarding conservation among students.
Under the guidance of experts, teams commenced the survey at 6:30 AM, covering the 34-acre campus. Thirty students and faculty members participated in the event, identifying 40 bird species, including the Shikra, Golden Oriole, Common Myna, House Sparrow, Indian Grey Hornbill, Coppersmith Barbet, Rufous Treepie, Greater Coucal, Asian Koel, Spotted Owlet, Black Drongo, Indian Silverbill, and Brahminy Starling.
Principal Anamika Jain stated that the presence of diverse species reflects a healthy ecosystem, adding that future initiatives would lead to improvements in avian habitats. Ritesh Khabiya and Swanil Phanse, members of ‘Wild Warriors,’ lauded the students’ participation. Preeti Chaturvedi, Head of the Department, emphasized the necessity of continuing such activities. Students shared their learning experiences, while coordinator Dharmendra Jat outlined the objectives of the initiative. This exercise familiarized participants with avian behavior, habitat patterns, and the ecological roles birds play in both agricultural and urban environments. The teams systematically documented their bird sightings, thereby strengthening their field research skills and fostering a long-term commitment to monitoring biodiversity within the campus and its surrounding green zones.
