Odisha: Tension escalates in Sambalpur village over allegations of poisoning of water sources

Odisha: A tense situation erupted in Kenalpada village of Talab Panchayat in Sambalpur district on Tuesday when villagers leveled serious allegations against two liquor traders. Villagers say the accused attempted to poison the village’s water sources after they protested against the illegal sale of alcohol.

The accused have been identified as Sujit Luha and Ajit Luha, brothers involved in the local liquor trade. Villagers allege that the brothers poured pesticides and other toxic chemicals into tube wells, wells, and even vegetable fields, potentially contaminating the water and crops.

According to villagers, there has been a long-standing protest in the village against the illegal sale of country liquor. A group has been raising their voice against this trade. A complaint was previously filed at the Sasan police station, following which the police confiscated liquor from the accused’s homes. This action has escalated tensions and animosity between the two parties.

The situation escalated on Tuesday when villagers claimed to have seen the two accused engaging in suspicious activities around wells and tubewells. Following this, villagers arrived at the scene and confronted the two brothers, leading to a tense situation and a confrontation between the two sides.

Following the incident, panic gripped the village, leaving locals terrified. Villagers feared that the contamination of water sources could have serious health consequences.

Upon receiving the information, the local administration and police began monitoring the situation. Officials appealed for peace in the village and announced an investigation into the matter.

Currently, water sources are being tested to determine whether any toxic substances have been added. Given the tension in the village, extra vigilance is being maintained to prevent any untoward incident.
