Tamil Nadu: Influence of film stars in politics, historical comparison on Vijay’s victory

Tamil Nadu: The influence of film stars in politics is once again in the news. After Vijay’s Tamil Nadu Victory Party (TVP) won a landslide victory in the very first assembly election, he is being compared to other prominent leaders in the state who transitioned from the film industry to politics.

Looking back at political history, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and actor N.T. Rama Rao also created history by winning power in the very first election after forming his own party. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) also formed his own party and successfully secured the position of Chief Minister in the very first election, garnering significant public support.

Tamil Nadu has a long history of film stars entering politics. After MGR, Jayalalithaa also entered politics from the film industry and later became the state’s Chief Minister. Leaders like Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi, who founded the Dravidian movement, also profoundly influenced the state’s politics.

However, political history also shows that not every leader achieved success initially. DMK founder Annadurai failed to reach power in the 1957 and 1962 elections. Later, he contested the 1967 elections with a seven-party alliance and won the Chief Ministership for the first time. This victory proved to be a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics.

Following this, M. Karunanidhi achieved success in the 1971 assembly elections. At that time, following the creation of Bangladesh, a wave of support for Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was sweeping the country. In this political environment, Karunanidhi formed an alliance with the Congress and won the election, becoming Chief Minister.

Amidst these historical precedents, Vijay’s TVP victory is now being seen as part of that tradition. Political analysts believe that the people of Tamil Nadu have always given new leadership and opportunity to change, especially when leaders have successfully connected with the public through public relations and popularity.

Vijay’s victory has also intensified the debate about whether Tamil Nadu is once again moving towards a new political era under the leadership of a film star. His supporters are calling it a result of the public’s “new thinking,” while political experts see it as a sign of changing social and political dynamics.

All eyes in state politics are now on how the TVP will govern after forming the government and whether it will be able to fulfill its election promises.
