Tamil Nadu: School girl who secured 2nd rank commits suicide

Tamil Nadu: A 9th-grade student in Salem committed suicide by hanging herself, disappointed by her failure to secure first place in her mid-term exams.
Kumaravel, a resident of Azhapuram in the Periyappudur area of Salem, was a 13-year-old daughter of Devika (13) who studied in 9th grade at a local school. Devika had secured second place in her class in the recent half-yearly exams.
Subsequently, when Devika returned home from school on Monday evening, she tearfully told her parents that she had failed to secure first place.
She then suddenly hanged herself in her room that night. Her parents were inconsolable upon discovering her body.
Police recovered the student’s body and sent it to the Salem Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The Bolands Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
