Tata Steel Adventure Foundation supports Kamya Karthikeyan’s Everest mission

Jharkhand-based Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), one of the country’s leading institutions promoting adventure sports, has decided to support 16-year-old mountaineering star Kamya Karthikeyan’s maiden attempt to climb Mount Everest.

The expedition of India’s youngest mountaineer to climb the world’s highest peak (29,031.7 feet) was flagged off by Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, from Jamshedpur on Friday. Kamya’s father S. is in the team. Karthikeyan, who is a commander in the Indian Navy.
The seven-week long operation, which began from Kathmandu on April 6, is expected to be completed in the last week of May.
“An expedition to the summit of Mount Everest requires a long acclimatization period of about 40-45 days at Everest Base Camp, including several detours to higher camps. There are four camps after the base camp on the way to the summit. At Camp Four at an altitude of 7,950, climbers have to wait before getting favorable weather to climb the final summit,” said senior TSAF officer Hemant Gupta, who is also an Everest summiteer.

He told that Kamya will reach Kathmandu on 3rd April.
“In addition to her efforts, with everyone’s blessings, good wishes and favorable circumstances, after the summit, she will return to Lukla and fly to Kathmandu by May 29,” a TSAF official said.
For Kamya, although this is her first attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest at such a young age, it is not her first major mountaineering attempt. Kamya has already climbed the highest mountains on five continents, many of which are considered a challenge even for healthy and fit adults.
