TDP, YSRC intensify election campaign in Guntur Lok Sabha constituency
Guntur: Both the ruling YSRC and the opposition Telugu Desam have intensified their campaigns to reach out to the public and strengthen their chances of victory in the Guntur Lok Sabha constituency.
Since its establishment in 1952, Guntur Lok Sabha constituency has been a stronghold of the Congress party. However, TDP managed to maintain a strong hold in this constituency in the last two decades. Despite its many efforts, the YSRC failed to win over Congress voters and lost the last two elections to TDP by a narrow margin of votes.
Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has reportedly asked Narasaraopet MP Lavu Sri Krishnadevarayalu to contest from Guntur Lok Sabha constituency as he wanted to field a BC candidate from the region. However, Krishnadevarayalu switched loyalties and joined the TDP.
Recovering from this setback, the YSRC top brass nominated Kapu community leader and veteran leader and son of MLC UmraReddy Venkateshwarlu, UmraReddy Venkata Ramana. As Ramana was reportedly not ready to contest the elections, after several discussions, the party high command announced Kilari Rosaiah, Ramana’s brother-in-law and sitting MLA from Ponnur.
On the other hand, after sitting MP Galla Jaydev’s decision to stay away from politics, NRI medical professional Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar is almost certain to contest as a TDP candidate to give a tough fight to the YSRC candidate. Although initially it was believed that Chandrasekhar would contest from Narasaraopet Lok Sabha constituency, TDP shifted him to Guntur after MP Krishnadevarayalu joined TDP.
To prevent Galla’s departure from affecting TDP’s chances of victory in Guntur, the main opposition party may field the economically strong Dr Chandrasekhar. After reportedly getting the green signal from the TDP high command, he met Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan and sought his support.
