The trend of green offices is increasing in India, it will help in reducing carbon emissions

Bengaluru: The demand for green offices is increasing rapidly in the country. Companies have taken 13 million square feet of office space in the top six cities of the country between April-June period in buildings that have received green certification. This information has been given in a report released on Tuesday.

Colliers report states that green office space leases have seen a growth of 24 percent year-on-year and it represents 82 percent of the total office space leased in the last quarter.

The report further said that the upcoming office space supply is also expected to be green certified. Green office space stock may increase to 600 million square feet in the next two to three years. Arpit Mehrotra, Managing Director, Office Space, Colliers India, said that this shows that the companies taking office space are committed to the goal of sustainability and this will also help the country in achieving the goal of sustainability.

From 2023, 70 to 80 percent of the office space leased by engineering, manufacturing, technology and BFSI companies is in green certified buildings. Bengaluru and Mumbai are leading in green office space. These two cities accounted for 50 percent of the total office space leased in the second quarter of 2024.
The report said that out of 13 million square feet of green office space, 60 percent of the new office space is in new buildings, which have been built in the last 5 years. There are three building certificates in the Indian market – LEED, GRIHA and WELL. These certificates are given by looking at the energy consumption, design and waste generation methods of a building etc. For the last several quarters, all the focus of developers, investors and customers is on increasing green office space.
