Thiruppavai instead of Suprabhatam in Tirumala during Dhanurmasam

Tirupati: The daily ritual of awakening Lord Venkateswara with Suprabhatam at the temple of Tirumala in view of the holy Dhanurmasam will be replaced by the traditional Thiruppaavai from December 17.

The interpretation of Thiruppavai to awaken the Lord will continue till 14th January. Suprabhatam will start again from the next day.

Goda Thiruppavai Pasoor Parayanam is a collection of about 30 pasoorams (strophes) written by Andal Goda Devi in praise of Lord Venkateswara.

According to the Puranas, this gave importance to the solar calendar during Dhanurmas. Only spiritual activities are done in temples in this month. There will be no regular Thomala service, where Jeer Gosthi is attended on normal days. During Dhanurmasam, a special silent Thomala is observed which is known as “Mooga Thomala”. He recites one Astra every day. Ekanta Seva Bhog is performed in front of the idol of Shri Krishna at the place of Srinivas.

Dhanurmas is considered very auspicious in Shri Vaishnav temples. He visited the temple of Tirumala with religious enthusiasm. So generally, Sahasra Namarchan is done with basil leaves. But as per the traditions of Vaikhanasa Bhrigu Samhita, during Dhanurmas, it is performed with betel leaves.
