This player became the first Indian fast bowler to take five wickets against South Africa in ODI

Johannesburg: Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh became the first Indian fast bowler to take a five-wicket haul against South Africa in ODI cricket.

The 24-year-old fast bowler achieved the feat during the first ODI between India and South Africa in Johannesburg.

Arshdeep was performing brilliantly with the ball and took 5 wickets for 37 runs in 10 overs with an economy rate of 3.7. The fast bowler dismantled South Africa’s top order by taking the wickets of Reeza Hendricks, Tony De Zorzi and Rassie van der Dussen. Later, they removed the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo.

Overall, he is the fourth bowler for India to take a five-wicket haul against South Africa in ODIs.
The first spinner was Sunil Joshi (5/6), who took a wicket against the Proteas in 1999. He was followed by spinners Yuzvendra Chahal (5/22) (2018 at Centurion) and Ravindra Jadeja (5/33) (2023 at Kolkata). Took two more five wickets.
After his brilliant bowling effort, Arshdeep said that he was trying to keep things simple and it is great to start his wicket haul with a five-wicket haul in ODIs.

“Trying to keep it simple. I did not open my account in ODI. It was great to start with Pfeiffer. The wicket was helpful. When we talked, we thought there wouldn’t be much movement. But we were surprised, there was also wind so the plan was to keep it wicket to wicket and look for LBW/bowled. Adaptability is important for us as bowlers. I am proud to represent and serve the country. It was also quite hot. I am playing the 50-over format after a long time, so it was difficult but after the fifth, I am feeling fresh. Although we thought so (there was friction in the pitch) but there was some moisture in the wicket, so the ball remained brand new,” Arshdeep said after the innings.
Talking about the match, Proteas decided to bat first. But Indian fast bowlers Arshdeep and Avesh Khan proved that decision fatal for the Proteas. Only De Zorzi (28 from 22 balls with two fours and two sixes) and Phehlukwayo (33 from 49 balls with three fours and two sixes) could make any decent contributions as South Africa were all out for 116 in 27.3 overs. .
Arshdeep (5/37) and Avesh (4/27) were India’s top bowlers. For India, spinner Kuldeep Yadav got one wicket.
India needs 117 runs to win and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
