Keep these things in mind before going out on the road
-Know your destination and plan your route.

  • Keep the vehicle in good condition. Make sure everything is in working order, especially the lights, brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, radiator, battery and car heating system.
  • Keep your windows and mirrors clean. Use your defroster and wipers to maximize your vision.
  • If possible, keep a reflector jacket and flashlight in the car so you can see and be seen if you get out of the car.
  • Keep your vehicle visible to others both in front and behind you by using low beam headlights as high beams reflect in the fog and reduce visibility.
-If visibility reduces, turn on fog lights, reduce speed and slow down, watch the speedometer, do not drive beyond the headlights.
  • Keep a safe distance and avoid tail-gating for sudden stops or changes in traffic patterns.
  • While driving, proceed while observing the road signs. Use the right side of the road or the painted road markings/centre divider as a guide and be patient.
  • During fog and sometimes rain, the road can be slippery. Caution should be exercised on slippery roads.
  • Use the horn from time to time to let other drivers know of your presence.
  • Do not try to overtake other vehicles.
  • Keep an eye on the road and use your ears more carefully to anticipate traffic.
  • Do not use distractions in your vehicle such as music, eating, drinking, smoking etc. while driving.
  • In extremely dense fog, where visibility is close to zero, turn on your parking lights first, then pull over to a safe location such as a local business parking lot and stop.
  • If there is no parking space or driveway, move your vehicle as far to the side of the road as possible. Once you come to a stop, turn on your parking lights, set the emergency brake, and take your foot off the brake pedal to ensure that the tail lights are not illuminated so that other drivers do not accidentally pass you.
