Trouble in Pakistan due to the rising cost of electricity
Pakistan: Electricity has been made costlier in Pakistan which is facing economic crisis. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has blamed the Muslim League-N party for the rising cost of electricity. PTI has warned that in the next few months, electricity rates may reach around Rs 85 per unit.
Fierce protests are also taking place in Pakistan regarding the rising cost of electricity. Meanwhile, PTI general secretary Umar Ayub Khan alleged that the PML-N government was responsible for the “increased and unmanageable” power bills. He said the PML-N was making the country dependent on costly imported energy. This year’s payments have reached 2,000 billion due to the Pakistan government’s take-and-pay contract.
For information, let us tell you that 70 percent of the electricity produced in Pakistan is dependent on imported fuel. As reported by Dawn, Ayub Khan claimed that the price of electricity has increased more than four times in just 15 months. Electricity rates have gone up from 16 per unit during PTI’s tenure to 68 per unit this year. After the increase in electricity bills, general public and trade unions protested in many cities. Now the matter is with Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul-Haq Kakar, who will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday to look into the matter.
The Express Tribune reported that the caretaker prime minister has called a meeting in Islamabad and also directed the power ministry and power distribution companies to provide detailed information in this regard. According to the statement of Pakistan’s PMO, consultations will be held regarding giving maximum relief to consumers regarding electricity bills. The protests in Karachi have demanded a reduction in additional taxes.
