TS student commits suicide in hostel

Kolkata: A fourth-year student of IIT Kharagpur’s electrical engineering department was found hanging in his hostel room, the institute said on Wednesday. The student has been identified as K Kiran Chandra (21), a resident of Telangana.

“With a sense of extreme shock, the students, staff and faculty members of IIT Kharagpur deeply condole the sudden demise of Kiran Chandra, a fourth-year dual degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering,” the statement said.

Chandra was a boarder of Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence on the IIT Kharagpur campus. Describing the sequence of events, the statement said, “By around 7:30 pm, Chandra was with his two roommates in their hostel room. Later, the other two students went on to pursue academic activities. Subsequently, around 8.30 pm, fellow boarders of LBS Hall found his room locked from inside. The door was forced open and he was found hanging. The security personnel and other students immediately brought him to BC Roy Technological Hospital. Despite all the efforts of the doctors, Kiran was declared dead at around 11:30 pm.”
