Two arrested in connection with Mukherjee Nagar coaching center fire incident

New Delhi (IANS) | Two persons have been arrested in connection with the fire incident at Mukherjee Nagar Coaching Centre. A Delhi Police officer gave this information on Friday. A case was registered at Mukherjee Nagar police station after the fire broke out at Bhandari House in Batra Complex. North West Delhi DCP Jitendra Meena said that a case was registered under sections 336, 337, 338, 120B and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

As part of the investigation, statements of 12 students and four staff members were recorded. Consequently, Shivesh Mishra, 45, a resident of Mukherjee Nagar and Shyam Sunder Bharti, 54, a resident of Model Town, have been arrested in connection with the case, the DCP said. However, a court later released him on bail.

Police revealed that both the arrested persons were associated with the coaching center running inside the building. One of them is the CEO of the institute while the other is the owner of another coaching institute.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court issued notices to the fire service, police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in the Mukherjee Nagar fire incident. A vacation bench of Justices Jasmeet Singh and Vikas Mahajan directed the Delhi Fire Service to conduct a fire safety audit and examine whether fire safety certificates have been issued or not and sought response within two weeks in the suo motu matter.

According to police, on Thursday, a PCR call was received at Mukherjee Nagar police station about a fire at Bhandari House building near Batra Complex, following which a police team was rushed to the spot. The official said that the rescue operation started immediately. Around 10 fire tenders and 16 CAT ambulances also reached the spot.

He had said that the fire was brought under control and students from the first and second floors were rescued. Around 200-250 students from various coaching centers were attending classes at the time of the incident. Altogether 61 students were injured in the incident. According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the fire broke out in the electric meters installed on the ground floor of the building.
