Umed Pariwar: Empowering persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Pune: Umaid Parivar, a dedicated parent organization, was founded in 1990 in Pune with a single objective: comprehensive rehabilitation of persons with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). For the past 33 years, Umaid Parivar has been a beacon of hope, working tirelessly to improve the lives of IDD persons and their families.

The organization’s commitment is evident in its various initiatives. Umaid Parivar has been instrumental in organizing bi-annual state-level conferences dedicated to the topic of IDD, thereby promoting knowledge sharing and progress in the field. In addition, they organize state-level annual drawing competitions as well as dance and drama competitions for students of special schools. These events provide an important platform for IDD persons to showcase their talents, build confidence, and integrate into the wider community. Umaid Parivar’s overarching objective is to create a strong support system for IDD persons and build a more sensitive society that understands and caters to the unique needs of differently abled people.

Umeed Parivar is deeply involved in counselling, training and retraining IDD individuals, empowering them to reach their full potential and become valuable, functional members of society. This includes providing them with essential life skills, vocational training and the support they need to carry on with daily life with greater independence.
