Union Minister Bhowmik inaugurated PM-Daksh scheme for disabled people in Shillong.

Shillong: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Kum Pratima Bhowmik inaugurated the skilled training program under PM-DAKSH (Pradhan Mantri Daksh and Kushta Sampann Grahi) Scheme for Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) in Shillong today. The program was organized at the Center for Comprehensive Regional Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Shillong.

The Minister also distributed Niramay Health Cards among the beneficiaries. Today in the program 10 people from Shillong enrolled for the training programme. Addressing the gathering, Bhowmik said that the Central Government is committed to the empowerment of persons with disabilities and is working on the vision of the Prime Minister by serving the last man. The minister said the commitment is evident from the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the North-East more than 60 times since 2014, while his Council of Ministers has also visited the North-East more than 450 times. The result is a miraculous transformation in the sector and his department has left no stone unturned in providing opportunities for inclusive growth to persons with disabilities.

He stressed on the need for skill training programs for the empowerment of Divyangjan and his department is always ready to extend any kind of support to meet the essential needs for their welfare. He said that the initiatives launched by the Department include a wide range of transformative actions, reflecting the Government’s continuous quest for a more inclusive society. He said that these initiatives reflect the DEPWD’s unwavering dedication to advancing disability rights and using technology to improve the lives of persons with disabilities across the country.

He gave detailed information to the people present about the schemes being implemented by the department for the disabled. He said that persons with disabilities are an integral part of human resources and the Central Government is committed to create an enabling environment in every possible way for inclusive opportunities for persons with disabilities.

He appreciated the efforts of the Comprehensive Regional Center for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC- Shillong) in providing better services to the disabled. The Minister particularly appreciated the services provided by the Center by organizing various medical treatments and vocational training classes for the speedy recovery of the disabled. He interacted with persons with disabilities and heard success stories narrated by the beneficiaries. The Minister also appreciated the efforts made by the State Government in taking forward the initiatives of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the benefit of the PwDs of the State.

Shri Praveen Baxi, Commissioner and Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya, Smt. Sabrella B Marak, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and other officials of the state government were also present in the programme.
