University administration clarified its stand on the issues raised by the protesters
In response to the demands of a protesting group at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the university administration has issued a statement clarifying its stand on the charter of demands and the issues raised by the protesters.
NEHU Vice-Chancellor, Prabha Shankar Shukla highlighted this when he addressed the appointment of Rohit Prasad during a press conference held a week ago. He further informed that the interviews for the posts of Statutory Officers and University Engineer are scheduled on November 20 and 22, 2023, for which preparations are going well.
With regard to other demands raised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), the Vice-Chancellor noted that the University has taken appropriate steps with regard to the University Health Centre. Following the order of the Central Government, essential purchases have started through GeM portal.
The University has adopted GeM portal for transactions in various academic departments and sections of the University. Three training-cum-exposure sessions have already been conducted to sensitize employees on the GeM procurement process. Over 50 secondary users have been listed and registered, and more are in the registration process. A statutory officer of the University has also been registered as a primary user in the GeM portal.
In response to the demand to relieve the teaching and technical staff from ministerial duties, the Vice Chancellor clarified that the additional involvement of the teaching staff in administrative tasks is to ensure smooth functioning of regular university operations to prevent delays. Once the vacancies are filled through the ongoing recruitment process, these teaching staff members will be automatically relieved. The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged that the teaching faculty take up these additional responsibilities with his consent and expressed his gratitude for their cooperation in administrative work.
Addressing other demands, the Vice Chancellor emphasized that university teachers play an important role in the Academic Council. Various important issues like marking system, inclusion of elected student representatives and admission procedures are discussed in this council. Policy decisions are taken keeping in mind the collective interest of all stakeholders.
Highlighting the current academic activities of the University including curriculum coverage and the upcoming examinations to be held in the first half of December, the Vice Chancellor expressed concern that the indefinite strike and protests without factual verification may disrupt these essential academic processes and the University’s Can negatively impact the educational environment.
The University Administration appealed to the concerned parties to hold constructive talks and verify the status of the points raised and steps taken by the University. The administration stressed that the protesting groups are part of the university and are aware of the progress being made in response to their demands.
Additionally, the university has appealed to students and their parents not to be concerned about any misinformation being spread by protest groups. He encouraged the students to continue their academic activities as per the scheduled schedule, and assured them that the University is committed to addressing the genuine concerns of all stakeholders and working towards creating a conducive academic environment for all students.
