Veer Das talked about taking Indian soil to the Emmys stage after his victory

With 56 nominees from 20 countries across 14 categories, the ceremony included notable Indian talents like Vir Das, Jim Sarbh and Shefali Shah recognized in the comedy and best actor/actress categories. In a recent interview, Vir Das reflected on the possibility of bringing Indian soil to the Emmy stage if he wins.
Vir Das’s Netflix stand-up special Landing received a nomination in the comedy category at the 2023 Emmy Awards. When Vir Das was asked about the possibility of bringing the stage on Indian soil if he wins, he shared his view. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity that awards ceremonies provide comedians, helping them compete with huge multimillion-dollar series like Derry Girls and other fantasy shows. While maintaining modesty regarding the possibility of winning, he underlined his joy at being nominated and mentioned that he did not expect to scatter sand on stage due to time constraints.
The conversation involving Vir Das and Indian soil stems from allegations against him for allegedly defaming India on foreign soil on several occasions. In response to these claims, Vir Das decided to take Indian soil with him whenever he performed. The concept was that whenever he made jokes about India or Indians, he would make sure that his feet were physically on Indian soil. This practice was highlighted in his stand-up special Landing, where a video is played at the end, showing him removing mud from Mumbai’s Juhu beach as a symbolic gesture.
