Violence in the state due to foreigners destabilizing Manipur: N. Biren Singh

Imphal (IANS). Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday said some misunderstandings, vested interests and conspiracies by foreign nationals trying to destabilize the state led to widespread violence. In which hundreds of people lost their lives and property was also damaged.

After unfurling the tricolor at the main Independence Day function at 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Ground, N Biren Singh said, “We have to live in harmony, as we all live together for many decades. More than a hundred people were killed in the violence, thousands were rendered homeless and property worth hundreds of crores was also destroyed.”

“Violence will not lead to any development. If there is any misunderstanding between the communities then we can sit on the table and discuss all the shortcomings. Our door is always open for that.”

Emphasizing on continuing to strive for justice and equality for all sections of the society, he said that his government was committed to the welfare of all people.

It is working tirelessly for the all round development and empowerment of the people. The state government is continuously working for the rehabilitation of the violence-affected.”

“Those who can no longer be taken to their native villages will be temporarily shifted to prefabricated houses being built in different districts.”

Everyone should maintain the “forgive and forget” mantra. The Chief Minister informed that a high-level committee has been constituted to provide the project of “One Family, One Livelihood” and to rehabilitate the people. It is working round the clock.

He reiterated that the war on drugs was not waged targeting any particular community or individuals. It was a holistic approach to save the lives of the youth and protect the state and the country.

The Chief Minister said that the government could not remain a wooden doll or a mute spectator when massive deforestation was initiated for illegal poppy cultivation.

He said that the State Government has initiated action for the welfare of the people to end the illegal drug trade.

“Manipur is the gateway to the Golden Triangle against drugs and illegal trade in the country. Large-scale deforestation for illegal poppy cultivation has also affected the state’s environment and water resources.”

He said that like other states of the country, the war against drugs was launched during the last part of 2018. The drug menace was affecting more than one lakh people in the state, especially the youth.

The Chief Minister said that ever since the BJP government came to power in Manipur in 2017, the government has been continuously working for the all-round development of the state and welfare of the people of all communities.

“There have been no clashes, bandhs and blockades between different communities for the last six years. Both the state-centre governments have allocated additional funds for the development of the state.”
