Winter electricity demand in national capital at all-time high
New Delhi: Cold weather in Delhi pushed the national capital’s winter power demand to an all-time high of 5,611 MW on Wednesday, officials said. According to real-time data from the State Load Despatch Centre, Delhi’s peak winter power demand at 11.08 am on Wednesday was 5,611 MW.
A BSES spokesperson said BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited) and BYPL (BSES Yamuna Power Limited) successfully met the maximum power demand of 2,350 MW and 1,174 MW respectively in their areas.
Officials said the previous highest demand in Delhi during winter was 5,559 MW on January 5, 2024.
A day after Delhi recorded the coldest day of the season, people in the national capital woke up to another cold morning on Wednesday. The minimum temperature is being recorded at 7.1 degrees Celsius.
According to the Meteorological Department, yesterday was the coldest day of this winter in Delhi, with the minimum temperature falling to 5.3 degrees Celsius.
It was still colder in neighboring Uttar Pradesh, with minimum temperatures in Kanpur and Agra falling below the freezing point at 1.1 and 1.0 degrees Celsius respectively.
According to the IMD, a ‘cold day’ is considered if the maximum temperature falls between 4.5 and 6.4 degrees below the seasonal norm.
If the temperature falls 6.5 degrees below the season’s normal range, it is called a severely cold day.
Dense fog blanketed the national capital, affecting visibility and delaying flights to and from Delhi. Amidst the biting cold outside, night shelters in Delhi provide shelter to homeless people who live on the streets and have nowhere else to go in the cold. Shelters provide blankets, bedding, hot water and food to asylum seekers.
