Women’s organizations submit memorandum to Dima Hasao SP requesting security measures to ensure safety of women and girls
Haflong: A memorandum was submitted to the Superintendent of Police in Dima Hasao on Wednesday by several women’s organizations of the region, requesting security measures to ensure the safety of women and girls.
The memorandum signed by presidents and secretaries of several organizations like Dimasa Mothers Association, Dima Hasao, Haflong, Shakli Mahila Mandal, Gorkha Nari Sangharsh Sangh, Haflong Mahila Kalyan Sangathan, Hamar Mahila Association Assam Hills Region, Kuki Mahila Association (Assam) made the demand. A sympathetic ear and understanding to the points he made regarding the recent shameful incident that happened with two minor girls on late evening of 4th May near Haflong market area.
Faced with disturbing visuals being circulated on various social media, women have raised this issue of concern regarding the safety of women including the safety of children, especially girls. They were shocked and appalled by the incident that happened with the minor girls, which brings to light the present scenario of this district, especially the headquarters, Haflong and how the safety of women has become questionable in a place that was once a haven for both women and children. It was the safest place for me. At any time of the day or night.
Keeping in view the above cases, women organizations have demanded that the culprits in this case should be arrested and booked under POCSO Act and given strict punishment as per the highest provision. The criminals, with malicious intent, had attempted to kidnap two minor girls by dragging them in their vehicle, which could have resulted in dire consequences.
He demanded that the three convicts and others involved in the crime of kidnapping should be given rigorous imprisonment and should not be spared under any circumstances.
“Police patrolling should be increased in and around Haflong city especially at night as anti-social activities have increased to a great extent in the city area etc. The persons involved were not natives of this district, but were migrant workers/laborers for commercial purposes. Therefore we want assurance that proper records are maintained of outsiders with their establishment, such as established businesses, helpers/juggernauts, public transport drivers including auto rickshaws, auto drivers under Haflong police station,” he said.
He also requested for police patrolling in every nook and corner of the city in the entire district. Apart from this, he demanded installation of proper street lights and installation of CCTV cameras at all strategic locations to ensure curbing of crimes in Dima Hasao.
