Zirakpur: Panel warns of probe into rape victim’s self-immolation incident

Punjab: A woman’s attempted self-immolation outside the Baltana police post in Zirakpur has deeply shocked the local administration and the public. Given the gravity of the incident, the Punjab Human Rights Panel took cognizance of the matter and announced a swift investigation. According to officials, the victim took this extreme step after facing persistent delays in receiving justice. According to reports, the woman attempted self-immolation by dousing herself with petrol in front of the police post. Police officers and locals immediately intervened, and the victim was admitted to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Doctors stated that the woman’s condition is currently stable, but mental and emotional health care is essential.
Local sources say that the victim had previously filed several complaints with the Baltana police post, alleging rape and harassment. However, pending complaints and delayed action have caused her mental distress. This incident has raised questions about the accountability of the police and administration and raised concerns about the safety of women and the state of the justice system. The Punjab Human Rights Panel, taking cognizance of the matter, stated that the incident is extremely serious from the perspective of women’s rights and safety. The panel has requested a report from the Baltana police station regarding the entire incident and formed an investigation team. The panel clarified that the administration must take immediate steps to provide justice and protection to the victim.
Experts believe that in such cases, not only are the police and administration responsible, but the victim must also be immediately provided with mental health, safety, and legal assistance. Pending complaints and the lack of justice can cause stress and frustration for the victim, as evidenced in this incident. Local social activists and women’s rights organizations are also expressing concern over the incident. They say that swift action against crimes against women is the only way to prevent such incidents in the future. They have appealed to the administration to ensure safety and justice for the victim, as well as provide mental health support.
