100 organ donations in 3 months in Tamil Nadu: A first in medical history

Tamil Nadu: In a unique initiative, over 100 organs have been donated in the past three and a half months, healing over 500 people.
Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan, Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Organ Transplant Commission, said: Organ transplant activities in Tamil Nadu are better and more advanced than in other states in the country. This is why Tamil Nadu remains the number one organ donation provider in India.
On September 23, 2023, the Chief Minister announced that the government would honor the bodies of organ donors. Subsequently, similar schemes have been implemented in various states across India.
In 2024, 268 people donated organs. Their donated organs have healed 1,500 people in government and private hospitals. Last year, organs from 266 brain-dead people were donated and transplanted into 1,476 people. In this regard, 100 organs have been donated this year. 177 kidneys and 80 livers have been donated. Additionally, 28 hearts and 29 lungs have been donated and transplanted into deserving individuals.
A total of 550 organs have been donated, which is a significant achievement.
So far, 14,146 organs have been donated from 2,421 donors in Tamil Nadu. These include 4,270 kidneys, 3,574 corneas, 2,144 livers, 1,097 heart valves, 1,011 hearts, and 1,047 lungs. He said that thousands of people have been rehabilitated through this.
