800 arrested in massive action against child marriage
Guwahati (IANS). Regarding Assam Police’s large-scale action against child marriage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that 800 people have been arrested while taking action against child marriage.
In a post on Twitter, Sarma said, “In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested more than 800 accused persons in a special operation. This is the data from the initial hours of the operation, the number of arrests is expected to increase. There is a possibility.”
According to a senior Assam Police official, the maximum number of arrests were made in Dhubri district.
Tuesday’s development comes after the Chief Minister’s recent announcement in which he had said, “The second round of action against child marriage will begin very soon.”
When Assam Police launched a massive drive against child marriage in February, 5,000 people were arrested across the state.
Sarma has claimed that Assam will become a child marriage free state within 2026.
He said, “Six months ago, 5,000 people were arrested in Assam on charges of child marriage. I was waiting for the conclusion of the G20 meeting. Now 2,000-3,000 men will be arrested on charges of child marriage. Child marriage will have to be eliminated from Assam.
