YSRCP finalises candidature of Vemireddi Prashanthi Reddy
In a significant political development, the YSRCP high command has reportedly finalized the candidature of Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy for the Nellore city Assembly constituency. She is the wife of Rajya Sabha member Vemireddy Prabhakara Reddy and is set to replace the current MLA and former minister, P Anil Kumar Yadav.
The decision to shift Anil Kumar to the Narasaraopeta Lok Sabha constituency was made after leaders from the ‘Reddy Community’ expressed their reluctance to cooperate with him for various reasons. Anil Kumar, belonging to the Backward Classes community, had previously won the Assembly elections in 2014 and 2019. In 2009, he contested as a Congress candidate but lost to Prajya Rajyam Party nominee Mungamuru Sridhakar Krishna Reddy by a narrow margin of 90 votes.
In light of dynamic political developments, Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy, who is relatively new to politics, has been chosen as the YSRCP candidate for Nellore city constituency. If elected, she would make history as the first woman candidate to contest from this constituency. Presently, she serves as the chairperson of the North India TTD Advisory Committee in New Delhi.
Historically, Nellore Parliament has seen the election of notable individuals such as Kudumula Padmasree (1991), Panabaka Lakshmi (1996, 1998, and 2004) under the Congress banner, and Ukkala Rajeswaramma (1991) on the TDP ticket when it was reserved for the Scheduled Caste.
The upcoming 2014 elections in Nellore city constituency appear to be marked by a caste war between the Reddy and Non-Reddy communities, reflecting the complex political landscape in the region. The finalization of Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy’s candidature adds an intriguing dimension to the electoral dynamics in Nellore.
