Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based NGO mobilises citizens to clean Thurka Cheruvu
Hyderabad: Members of Hyderabad-based voluntary organisation Youth For Seva (WiFS) organised a lake cleaning and tree plantation programme at Thurka Cheruvu in Nizampet on Saturday morning. Around 100 volunteers of Youth For Seva, mostly employees of software companies and other multinationals in Hyderabad, gathered near Thurka Cheruvu on Saturday morning to participate in the lake shore cleaning exercise. Over the years, Thurka Cheruvu has become an easy target for the highly densely populated local community of Nizampet to dump their garbage.
To raise awareness about the environment, WiFS organised the event a few days ahead of World Environment Day, which falls on June 5. “We have cleaned the lake 2-3 times in recent years, but it is difficult for us to come to clean the lake repeatedly. It is not sustainable. So, we organise such programmes across the city to create awareness among the locals so that they can clean and maintain the lake themselves,” said a YFS member. The volunteers showed a lot of enthusiasm while collecting the garbage. The garbage they collected included things like empty liquor bottles, rotten vegetables and wrappers. After cleaning the lake, they planted saplings on the banks of the lake.
