Maritime incident reported off the coast of Yemen
Aden: The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has issued a statement about an alleged incident that took place about 170 nautical miles southwest of Aden, Yemen.
According to the UKMTO, relevant authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, although specific details of the incident have been kept secret for now, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.
The report marks the conclusion of 13 days of relative calm in the waters of the region. Yemeni authorities have indicated that this is the first reported incident after nearly two weeks of calm in maritime unrest.
Meanwhile, the Houthi group in Yemen, which has been linked to previous maritime attacks in the region, has not claimed responsibility for the alleged incident. Since November 2023, the group has participated in a series of drone and missile attacks targeting shipping lanes, reportedly in support of the Palestinians amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. Houthi-led attacks have significantly affected international maritime commerce by targeting ships passing through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
