Cyber criminals dupe retired defence department officer
Bilaspur. A case of online fraud of Rs 9.53 lakh has come to light from a retired defence department officer Chhedi Lal Patel in Bilaspur. The fraudster, posing as a bank employee, committed this fraud by luring him to increase the credit card limit. On the complaint of the incident, Sakri police has registered a case and started investigation.
Chhedi Lal Patel, who lives in Galaxy Apartment, has an account in the Collectorate branch of State Bank of India (SBI). He received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number on November 22. The caller, posing as a bank officer, offered to increase his credit card limit from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.75 lakh. To gain confidence, the fraudster sent a link, on clicking which, Rs 80,064 were withdrawn from his account on November 22 and 24. On November 25, when Chhedi Lal received the message of card statement, he immediately tried to contact SBI Collectorate branch by searching its number on Google. However, the same evening he received a call from the same number. The caller assured him that his money would be returned and sent a new link asking him to click on it. As soon as the link was clicked, amounts of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 3.73 lakh were again transferred from his account.
Chhedi Lal lodged a complaint at Sakri police station on December 3. The police have registered a case against the unidentified fraudster under Section 318(4) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS), 2023. So far, no clue has been found about the fraudster.
